Steve-O-Gerst I've noticed that it's very hard to find archaeological information about former castles.
I guess there are a lot of reasons: It's boring, and if you tell people where the sites are, they often try to steal artifacts...
But would it be possible, or even worthwhile to have a forum for arcaheological details, I suppose some of us here might care about how the castles were in the past...
Merlin What exactly do you mean? A forum to trace castles that are not visible any more? I don't know how it is in England, but for Switzerland there exists a very detailed castle-map which lists all known sites. A new, even better edition will be published bei the Swiss Castle Association (Burgenverein) by the end of 2006. Similar works exist for Tyrolia and for parts of Germany.
AJR There are a number of books covering the sites of English, Welsh and Scottish castles.
Levan There are several books listing the sites of castles in the Unitied Kingdom. Some cover the entire country; others are more detailed and cover specific regions - as an example, one of my favourites is the book by Gordon Mason entitled, "The Castles of Glasgow and the Clyde". Similarly, there are many useful books by Mike Salter. Not that I'm recommending any particular supplier, but here's the Amazon listing of Mike's books:

For an online resource, Philip Davies (a former moderator on this site) has an excellent list of all known English and Welsh castle sites, together with grid references and a categorisation depending on castle type. Steve-O-Gerst Mm. Yes, castles that are in ruins, things archaeologists have dug up about castles, and the like. For the silliness I'm doing right now, talking with heavy researchers in that field would be useful, I think.
Of course, archaeology is sometimes also done to reconstruct the past appearance of existing castles, and that would be nice.
Mainly, I'm looking for information about French castles, which is somewhat harder to come by, since they're... Well, all in french, mostly.
Phillip's got some good stuff. Wish I could get a hold of him. His Email doesn't seem to be working, and there are a few things about Marlborough Castle I'd like to clear up with him...

A paperback of nearly 500-pages. Can't recall what it cost me now, but the no is

I recently picked up;
The Chateaux of France (in English)
Hubert Fenwick 1975 (almost 400-pages)
This was about Ł10 with postage through Abe Books off the net. You can get these books on other countries, but they aint always cheap!
